Sherlock Holmes fancy dress is always a great idea for a murder mystery theme. To get the perfect Sherlockian look you need to go big on the clothes and accessories.
First of all the deer stalker cap is a must. Make sure to get one in just right shade of brown check to make sure you have the perfect look for the foggy london streets or the yorkshire moors.
Next you’ll need to go for that weird over the shoulder cape thing that Holmes prefers.
No Sherlock Holmes fancy dress costume is complete without a pipe. Your big choice here is are you going to go for a serious real pipe, maybe even one you can smoke actual tobacco from, or will you go for the ridiculous bubble blowing fake pipe. Both have their charm.
If you want to have look for a couple fancy dress costume you could consider dressing someone up in a watson fancy dress costume to go alongside the great detective. The Watson fancy dress look involves a moustache, big fuzzy sideburns, a three piece suit including waistcoat (this can be safely sourced from a charity shop – the more old man looking the better) and gold watch fob.
Other Sherlock Holmes fancy dress characters you could consider are his arch enemy Professor James Moriarty or his housekeeper Mrs Hudson.
Moriarty was oftenly called “the Napoleon of Crime” by Holmes so if you dress like him try to go for a bit of a little dictator attitude. One of the most iconic scenes between Holmes and Moriarty was their final encounter in “The Final Problem” story. They battle to the death above the Reichenbach Falls. So perhaps you could act this out between the people in the Sherlock Holmes fancy dress and Moriarty fancy dress at your party. Make share to kit out each of the combattants with a stiff cane for some realistic fighting.
To dress like Moriarty go for a long trench coat, top hat, suit and a sombre expression.

Mrs Hudson was the landlady at 221B Baker Street so she is a great choice if a girl in your group wants to join the band of Sherlock Holmes character outfits. She is usually an older woman, so think about grey wigs or grey hair dye, wearing frilly matronly clothing.
Mrs Hudson would put up with a lot of shenanigans from Holmes such as his target practice within the house, loud violin playing or fantastic chemistry experiments. So think about acting out these scenes between the Holmes and Hudson characters.
